Mahjong Set Malaysia: What to Buy and What to Pay

Which tile count fits your game, what the tile sizes mean, which materials you will see, and dated RM prices from real shops and listings.

Choosing a mahjong set Malaysia players will enjoy starts with one question: which game do you play? The Malaysian 4-player game and the 3-player game use different tiles. So a set that suits one table may not suit the other. This guide covers tile counts, sizes, materials and prices.

Every price below is dated and comes from a shop page or a marketplace listing we checked in October 2026. Prices change often, so treat them as a guide. For shop details and addresses, see our list of mahjong shops in Malaysia.

Which tile count should you buy?

Every set shares a core of 136 playable tiles. Then each style adds bonus tiles on top. So the count on the box of any mahjong set Malaysia shops sell tells you which games it can handle. Our guide to mahjong tiles explains every tile in detail.

148 tiles for the 4-player game

The Malaysian and Singapore 4-player game adds four animal tiles: cat, rat, rooster and centipede. So a 148-tile set is the safe choice for the Malaysian 4-player game. TheSmartLocal, a Singapore site, calls 148 tiles the Singapore standard.

By contrast, a 144-tile set has no room for animals. For example, one Sabah shop sells a "Malaysia Spec" automatic table with 144 tiles and states "no animal tiles". So read the full tile list, not just the label on a mahjong set Malaysia sellers advertise.

84 tiles: the 3 player mahjong set

The Malaysian 3-player game uses only 84 tiles. It keeps the dots suit, the honours and the bonus tiles. It also adds 4 face tiles and 4 fly (飛) jokers. A 144-tile set has no faces or jokers, so it cannot cover this game alone.

Dedicated 84-tile sets do exist. Vulcan Post describes MyJong's 84-tile set as the "Malaysian 3-player variation". Also, The Star reported in June 2025 that these 3-player sets were the maker's most-ordered product. However, we found no price for a mass-market 84-tile set. If you want a 3 player mahjong set, check that the listing names the face and fly tiles.

156 and 168 tile sets

Some listings show even more tiles. For example, Tekkashop sells a 168-tile set, and a cartoon set on Shopee has 156. Before you buy one, ask the seller what the extra tiles are. Then check that they match your house rules.

Mahjong tiles size: what the numbers mean

On marketplaces, a mahjong set Malaysia sellers list comes in tile sizes from 36mm to 44mm. You will see options such as 36–42mm, 38–44mm, 40mm and 40–42mm. The 40mm size appears often in listing titles. However, we found no source that says which size is most common in Malaysia.

TheSmartLocal publishes a size guide by height, length and width. It calls the A1 size the "recommended standard". Its figures are below.

Mahjong tile sizes in TheSmartLocal's guide (Singapore)

Large39 × 30 × 23
A137 × 28 × 22
A235 × 26 × 20
A331 × 23 × 19
Mini20 × 14 × 11

Which size suits you?

Larger tiles are easier to see and to pick up. So they may suit older players. Smaller tiles save space and weight, which helps on trips. Also, check all three measurements in a listing, not just one number. Then compare them with the table above.

Tiles for automatic tables

Automatic tables need tiles with built-in magnets, made for that table. Japanese Wikipedia notes that other tiles can cause faults. US listings say tables ship with 40mm, 42mm or 44mm magnetic tiles. They also warn that each size fits only the table style built for it.

So an ordinary set will not work in an automatic table. If you need spare tiles, buy the size and type the maker names. Our guide to the automatic mahjong table in Malaysia covers this in more detail.

Materials you will see

The mahjong set Malaysia makers produce comes in several materials. The material and the handwork both affect the price, as the price table further down shows.

  • Melamine. Aquaholic Gifts in KL makes custom-branded melamine sets. TheSmartLocal also lists a melamine set in Singapore at S$59.
  • Acrylic. Some rummy and lami sets on Lazada use acrylic tiles.
  • Imitation jade. Gamesroom's automatic table comes with imitation-jade tile sets.
  • Wood. MyJong in Petaling Jaya makes sets by hand from cengal and merbau wood. It has also made a plywood set.
  • Engraved and hand-painted. Flying Desk in Johor Bahru sells engraved, hand-painted sets.
  • Older materials. Antique sets from the 1800s used bone and bamboo. Later, some sets came in Bakelite, like the one in the photo.

Handmade tiles still exist in Malaysia too. Liang Yew Mahjong Centre in George Town, Penang, makes tiles by hand. It also repairs tiles and takes custom orders.

What's in the box

Contents vary a lot from one listing to the next. So before you buy, check that the listing or the seller confirms each item below.

  • The tile list. Look for each group by name: suits, honours, flowers, animals, faces and fly jokers.
  • Dice. You need them, because the dealer rolls dice to choose seats and to break the wall.
  • A case. A firm case keeps the set together and protects the tiles.
  • Full tile size. Height, length and width in mm.
  • A mat. Mats are often sold on their own. In October 2026, basic Shopee mats started at RM10.85, while designer rug-style mats cost RM203.39 to RM261.69.

Mahjong set Malaysia prices (October 2026)

Here is what a mahjong set Malaysia shoppers can buy costs today. Marketplace figures are single Shopee and Lazada listings, read through the BigGo Malaysia price site on 16 October 2026. Retailer figures come from each shop's own page on the same date. Each row is one listing, not an average.

In short, the mahjong set price Malaysia buyers pay depends on size, material, tile count and handwork. A plain full-size set from a marketplace sits in the low hundreds. Meanwhile, themed, engraved and handmade sets cost more. You can read more about the wooden sets in Vulcan Post's report on MyJong.

Travel mahjong set options

A travel mahjong set is the cheapest way to start. In October 2026, Shopee travel sets cost RM25.85 to RM66.99, and mini portable sets cost RM74.25 to RM105.49. A branded Hello Kitty mini travel set was listed at RM399. Mini tiles in TheSmartLocal's guide measure only 20 × 14 × 11mm. So they pack small, but they are harder to read.

Where to buy a mahjong set in Malaysia

Most mahjong set Malaysia listings sit on Shopee and Lazada. For automatic tables alone, BigGo counted about 482 Shopee listings and 52 on Lazada in October 2026. So you have plenty of choice, but quality varies.

You can also buy from a shop or a maker. Our mahjong shop Malaysia guide lists sellers we could verify in the Klang Valley, Penang, Johor, Melaka and Sabah.

Older advice points to shops as well. A 2016 Lowyat forum thread named Tesco, Giant, Popular, Mr DIY and pasar malam stalls, with Tesco sets below RM100. That advice is ten years old, though, so check stock before you go.

Best mahjong set: a buying checklist

There is no single best mahjong set. Instead, the best one is the set that fits your game and your players. Use this list before you pay.

  • Match the count to your game. Buy 148 tiles for the 4-player game with animals, or 84 for the 3-player game.
  • Read the tile list. Look for animals, faces and fly jokers by name.
  • Check the full size. Ask for height, length and width in mm.
  • Think about your players. Larger tiles help older eyes, while a travel set suits trips.
  • Automatic table? Then buy only the magnetic tiles its maker names.
  • Check the date. Marketplace prices change every day.
  • Ask about returns. Find out what happens if a tile is missing or broken.

In short, a plain set with the right tiles beats a fancy mahjong set Malaysia shops sell with the wrong ones.

Caring for your set

Simple habits keep any mahjong set Malaysia shops sell in good shape. First, count the tiles after each session, so you notice a loss early. Then pack the set back in its case. Keep it away from heat and damp. Also, wipe the tiles with a soft, dry cloth now and then.

If a tile breaks, you may not need a new set. For example, Liang Yew in Penang repairs tiles. Automatic tables need different care, so see our table guide for that. Before your first game, read how to play mahjong to get the most from your new set.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a mahjong set cost in Malaysia?

As of October 2026, travel sets on Shopee cost about RM26 to RM67. Full-size 144-tile sets cost about RM275 to RM530 on marketplaces. Engraved, hand-painted sets from Flying Desk cost RM420 to RM450. Handmade wooden sets from MyJong started at RM3,500 in June 2025. Prices change often, so check the listing date before you buy.

Should I buy a 144-tile or a 148-tile set?

Buy 148 tiles if you play the Malaysian 4-player game with animals. The extra four tiles are the cat, rat, rooster and centipede. A 144-tile set has no animals, so it suits tables that skip them. Neither set covers the 3-player game on its own, because that game needs face tiles and fly jokers.

What is the standard mahjong tiles size?

Malaysian listings sell tiles from 36mm to 44mm, and 40mm appears often in titles. However, no source we found says which size is most common in Malaysia. TheSmartLocal's Singapore guide calls its A1 size, 37 × 28 × 22mm, the "recommended standard". Always check all three measurements in a listing.

Can I buy a 3 player mahjong set?

Yes. The Malaysian 3-player game uses 84 tiles, with dots, honours, flowers, animals, 4 face tiles and 4 fly jokers. MyJong makes an 84-tile set that Vulcan Post calls the "Malaysian 3-player variation". We found no price for a mass-market 84-tile set, so check that any listing names the face and fly tiles.

Can I use my own tiles on an automatic table?

No. Automatic tables need tiles with built-in magnets, made for that table. Other tiles can cause faults. US listings say tables use 40mm, 42mm or 44mm magnetic tiles, and each size fits only its own table style. So if you need spares, buy the exact size and type the table's maker names.

What is the best mahjong set for beginners?

The best mahjong set for a beginner is one that matches the game your friends play. For most Malaysian 4-player tables, that means 148 tiles with animals. Pick a size that is easy to read. Then make sure the set comes with dice and a case. A plain set from the low hundreds of ringgit is enough to start.
